Cold Storage

Plain-language definition Crypto glossary
Definition

Cold storage refers to keeping a cryptocurrency wallet’s private keys entirely offline, disconnected from the internet, to reduce exposure to remote hacking. Common forms include hardware wallets, which are dedicated devices that sign transactions without exposing the key to an internet-connected computer, and paper wallets, where keys are printed or written down.

Why it matters

Most large-scale crypto thefts exploit online systems: malware, phishing, or compromised servers. Keeping keys offline removes that entire attack surface, which is why cold storage is widely recommended for holdings someone does not need to move frequently. The trade-off is convenience: signing a transaction typically requires physically connecting the device, which is slower than a wallet that is always online.

Example

Hardware wallets are a common form of cold storage for individuals; large exchanges also keep the bulk of customer funds in cold storage and only a small operational portion in hot wallets for day-to-day withdrawals.
